What is the Thales 2021 Access Management Index?
The Thales 2021 Access Management Index (AMI 2021) is a global survey focused on how organizations are handling access security in the era of remote work and cloud adoption.
Conducted by 451 Research, part of S&P Global Market Intelligence, the study gathered insights from 2,600 IT decision-makers worldwide. The goal was to understand how COVID-19–driven remote work and cloud transformation are reshaping security strategies, and where current access management tools are falling short.
In short, AMI 2021 helps IT and security leaders benchmark their own access management approach against global peers and identify where they may need to rethink or strengthen their security posture.
How has remote work changed access security needs?
COVID-19 rapidly expanded remote work, which has reshaped access security requirements for most organizations.
According to the Thales 2021 Access Management Index:
- 6 in 10 IT leaders say that traditional tools like VPNs are still the primary way employees access applications remotely.
- Almost 44% of respondents are not confident their current access security systems can scale effectively to secure remote work.
This shows that many organizations are still relying on legacy approaches designed for office-based networks, even as their users, apps, and data move outside the traditional perimeter. As a result, IT teams are under pressure to reimagine access management so it can support a more distributed, cloud-centric workforce.
Why are traditional VPN-based tools no longer enough?
The Thales 2021 Access Management Index highlights that while VPNs remain widely used, they are increasingly misaligned with modern access needs.
Key findings include:
- 60% of organizations still rely on traditional tools such as VPNs as the main way employees access applications remotely.
- Nearly 44% of IT decision-makers lack confidence that their current access security systems can scale to secure ongoing remote work.
This gap suggests that VPN-centric models, which were designed for a more centralized, on-premises environment, can struggle with:
- Supporting large numbers of remote users at once
- Providing consistent security across cloud and on-premises apps
- Delivering a smooth user experience without performance bottlenecks
Organizations are therefore looking to rethink access management, moving toward approaches that are better suited to cloud transformation and long-term remote or hybrid work.
